This record group consists of various records relating to the Michigan military establishment. The record group includes: record of State Naval Board (1911-20); minutes of the Board of Directors of Detroit Armory Corporation (1907-15); records relating to Camp Eaton, Island Lake (1898), including detail for duty, letters, list of men, orders, petitions and reports of inspection, sick, force absent and present, and guard; Spanish War claims (1899-1903), including petitions, statements and papers accompanying claims of the state of Michigan for reimbursement of certain expenditures; minutes of Board of Survey (1897-1900), and the minutes of the Detroit Light Guard (1891-1907).

Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838. Public Act 147 of 1846 completely re-organized the state militia. Public Act 198 of 1893 officially designated the militia as the Michigan National Guard.
